about

Farka (5:00) Take 2, Fis major with capo on 2nd fret.
I put a thin piece of plastic between the strings at the
bottom of the guitar's chair. This gives the guitar

something "percussive" as a clear reference to the Ko-
ra. Farka is written with "inspirational" grounding

in the sound of Ali Farka Toure as well as Koo Nimo.
Some musical threads that, for me, have a sneak peek
through the small crevices of music and tickle the
scratches that naturally occur along the way. With

guitar and backpack, I traveled around Ghana in
1997 to sniff and feel the soul and culture that is so
deeply engraved in the music I love so much. One of
the things that became very clear to me was how

present and clear the American Folk Blues is groun-
ded in the West African mold. The pentatonic scale,

the repetitions, the ostinate play, as well as the song's
narratives as identity-creating testimonies of living
conditions, folk tales and political commentary.
Many of these elements were also expressed when I
sought out Ghanaian guitarist Koo Nimo (Daniel
Amponsah). I remember knocking on the door of his
house, which was isolated in the jungle around
Kumasi. As I approached the house I could hear some
women rhythmically "knocked" the fu-fu in the
courtyard. I knocked on the door and Koo Nimo came
out and shaked my hand. An elderly gray-haired and
incredibly welcoming man who responded to my
somewhat unexpected visit with great openness. We
sat out in the garden under a parasol and jammed
over a C major chord. Koo Nimo's style of playing is
based on the Palmwine guitar style, which originates
from Highlife. His playing is filled with ostinates,
melody plays in the chord and small subtleties. He
used a nylon stringed Spanish guitar, tuned in
standard tuning and often used capo. How long we sat
there under the trees in the garden I do nothave also brought me back home.remember, but I know that the tracks that led me out
